Find Your Perfect Temperature Setting

Standard industry advice is to set your heating between 20°C and 21°C.

It’s tempting to crank the thermostat to 26°C when you’re freezing, but doing so won’t heat the room any faster. It just forces the unit to work harder for longer.

Every single degree you increase the target temperature adds roughly 10% to your running costs.

 

Pro Tip

Every person is different. You don’t necessarily need the house to feel tropical. 

Often, setting the unit to 18°C is enough to take that biting cold edge off the room while keeping your power consumption low.


Window Tinting and Sun Management

Windows are the absolute biggest source of heat loss in a standard Perth home. 

While managing your curtains is important (open during the day for solar gain, closed at night to trap heat), you can even go a step further for a better long-term solution.

We’ve recently been working with a customer looking to optimise their home’s thermal efficiency.

We discussed window treatments, specifically reflective tinting.

Reflective tint significantly reduces the amount of heat that escapes through the glass in winter, while also stopping the rooms facing the sun from acting like a greenhouse in summer.

Different styles of tinting are available, and they are one of the best passive upgrades you can make to support your AC.

 

It’s About Outlets, Not Just Zones

If you have ducted air conditioning, you probably use your zoning to close off unused rooms.

But here is an insider tip: it’s the number of outlets you turn off that matters, not just the number of zones.

For example, turning off a small guest bedroom zone (which only has one outlet) won’t save you nearly as much energy as turning off the open-plan living zone (which might have four or five outlets).

Be mindful of how much airflow you are actually shutting down when managing your zones.


Harness the Timer Function

Don’t wake up freezing and instantly force your system to run at 100% capacity.

Use your timer. Set the system to switch on to a moderate temperature about an hour before your alarm goes off.

Raising a home’s temperature slowly and steadily is much more energy-efficient than demanding a rapid heat-up.

 

Check Your Remote Mode

We get dozens of callouts every winter for systems that aren’t blowing hot air, only to find the remote is on the wrong setting!

Ensure your remote displays the Sun symbol (Heating) or says Heat.

Avoid the Snowflake (Cooling) or Arrow (Automatic) symbol. Auto mode can cause the system to fight itself, wasting energy as the temperature fluctuates.

 

Clean Your Filters Regularly

Airflow is the lifeblood of an efficient system.

Perth summers are notoriously dusty, meaning your system likely accumulated a heavy load of debris and pet dander over the warmer months.

A choked filter forces the blower motor to work twice as hard, driving up your electricity bill.

If you have a standard washable mesh filter, simply pull it out, hose it down, let it dry, and pop it back in.

Winter Air Conditioning Behaviour: What is Normal? (The Defrost Cycle)

Every winter, especially when the temperature drops near freezing in the Perth hills or inland areas like Joondalup and Midland, our phones ring off the hook with customers reporting their outdoor unit is smoking or has stopped working.

Usually, the system is perfectly fine. It has just entered Intelligent Defrost (De-Ice) Mode.

When extracting heat from near-freezing outdoor air, moisture can freeze onto the outdoor unit’s coils, literally turning the unit white with ice.

If ignored, this thin layer of ice blocks airflow and kills efficiency. To protect itself, the system temporarily reverses its cycle to melt the ice.

 

During a Defrost Cycle, you will notice

  1. The indoor fan stops: The unit pauses heating so it doesn’t blow a freezing draft into your home.

     

  2. A loud whoosh: You might hear a sudden gas-flow sound. This is normal; it’s just the reversing valve shifting.

     

  3. Smoke outside: This is actually harmless steam rising off the outdoor unit as the ice rapidly melts.

     

  4. Water runoff: The melting ice creates a lot of water.


Important

Never turn the unit off during a defrost cycle!

Let it finish naturally (it usually only takes a few minutes), and it will automatically return to heating your home.

 

Quick Troubleshooting: The Hard System Reset

If your air conditioner stops running altogether or displays an error code on the wall controller, don’t immediately call for a technician.

Try a Hard System Reset first.

Modern air conditioners are essentially large computers, and like any computer, a reboot often clears minor electrical glitches.

 

Locate the Isolator Switch

Find your air conditioner’s isolation switch. This is usually a heavy-duty switch located outside directly next to the condenser unit, or a specific circuit breaker inside your main electrical meter box.

 

Kill the Power

Flick the switch to the completely OFF position to cut all electrical supply to the system.


Wait 60 Seconds

Leave the power off for a full, uninterrupted 60 seconds. This allows the internal capacitors to drain and the microprocessors to fully reset.


Restore Power and Test

Turn the power back ON and try to operate the system from your remote or wall controller.

If the unit fails to restart or the fault code returns after completing this sequence, turn the system off to prevent damage and contact our service team immediately.
