Cleaning or replacing your filters is the single most effective maintenance task you can perform.

Field-Tested Guide: Cleaning Washable Mesh Filters
If your home runs a standard wall-mounted split system or a ducted return grille with a flexible mesh insert, target a cleaning cycle every 3 to 6 months (or every 8 to 12 weeks if you live on the coast or keep pets indoors).
Isolate the power completely
Turn off the air conditioner at the wall controller and isolate the circuit at your main switchboard.
Never reach into an active return box; static charge can pull loose debris straight into the barrel fan.
Open the housing without dropping dust
For split systems, lift the front panel until it clicks into its stay brackets. For ducted ceiling grilles, unlatch the thumbscrew or spring clips.
Tech Tip: Support the hinged frame with one hand while unlatching—if it drops suddenly, months of trapped dust will dump onto your floor.
Vacuum the intake (dirty) side first
Take the mesh frames outdoors immediately.
Use a soft brush attachment on your vacuum to pull off the loose top layer of dust.
Always vacuum the front-facing intake side first so you aren’t forcing heavy debris deeper into the weave.
Backwash with low-pressure water
Hook up the garden hose and spray from the clean (back) side through to the dirty (front) side.
Flushing from behind pops embedded grit out of the mesh pores. High-pressure nozzles or hot water can warp the light plastic frames, so stick to standard tap pressure.
Dry completely in shade
Shake off excess water and stand the frames upright in a shaded, well-ventilated spot.
Never reinstall damp or wet filters—the dark, humid space behind the grille becomes an immediate breeding ground for mould (Cladosporium) and foul, damp-sock odours on your evaporator coils.

The Open-Plan Kitchen Grease Trap
If your return air grille sits near an open-plan kitchen, it doesn’t just catch dust—it captures vaporised cooking oils.
This grease leaves an invisible, tacky film on washable mesh that water alone cannot break down.
The Fix: If the frame feels sticky after rinsing, submerge it in warm water with a few drops of dishwashing liquid for 15 minutes before backwashing.
This dissolves organic fats that choke airflow at a microscopic level.
The “Mesh Sag” Air Bypass
Over years of heat cycles, plastic mesh frames lose tension and sag. Even a 3mm gap along the perimeter channel allows raw, unfiltered air to bypass the filter entirely.
That bypass dust lands straight on your indoor fan motor and wet aluminum coils, creating a thick sludge that requires a full chemical wash to clear.
The Fix: Shine a torch along the tracking channel when reinstalling.
If you see daylight or sagging edges, the frame has reached its end of life and needs replacing.
Pleated Media Filters: Do NOT Hose Them Down
High-efficiency ducted systems often use deep-pleated disposable media filters rather than plastic mesh. These rely on electrostatically charged paper or composite fibres.
The Fix: Washing a pleated filter ruins the electrostatic charge and collapses the paper folds.
Vacuuming only removes top-level dust while leaving microscopic pores permanently clogged.
Disposable pleated filters must be completely replaced every 6 to 12 months.

Once your filters are clean and dry, pair them with efficient temperature settings—we recommend 24°C for cooling in summer and 18°C to 20°C for heating in winter.
